Culture is ‘how things are done around here.  Culture is also the glue that holds teams together.  It creates a sense of belonging.  It contributes to employee engagement, satisfaction, and talent retention, leading to individual, team and organisational success.

  1. Clearly define the core values that underpin the organisational culture.  Consistently communicate these to employees through various channels, such as company-wide meetings, internal communications, and visual displays. Reinforce these values in everyday operations, interview processes, onboarding and decision-making processes.
  2. Leaders play a crucial role in shaping the organisational culture. Consistently demonstrate integrity, respect, open communication, and collaboration. 
  3. Encourage employees to share their ideas, concerns, and feedback.  Actively listen to employees’ opinions whilst actioning concerns.
  4. Foster an environment that promotes collaboration and a supportive atmosphere where individuals can work together towards shared goals.
  5. Give employees autonomy and the authority to make decisions related to their work whenever possible. Provide opportunities for professional growth and development. This helps build confidence, job satisfaction and fosters a culture of ownership and accountability.
  6. Celebrate and recognise employee achievements and contributions. Regularly express appreciation for employees’ efforts, both publicly and privately.
  7. Promote a healthy work-life balance by offering flexible work arrangements, encouraging breaks, and discouraging excessive overtime, which can lead to burnout. Create policies that prioritise employee well-being, such as wellness programs, stress management initiatives, and mental health support.
  8. Foster a culture of learning and development by providing opportunities for professional development and growth. Offer training programs, workshops, mentorship, and career advancement opportunities.
  9. Implement diversity and inclusion policies and practices that promote equal opportunities, and diversity in hiring and promotions, and foster a culture of inclusivity. 
  10. Provide opportunities for employees to build social connections and camaraderie. Organise team-building activities, social events, and initiatives that encourage informal interactions among colleagues.
